The database contains a collection of broadside ballad sheets from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. The collection focuses on printed broadside ballad sheets on religious and spiritual topics. In terms of genre, it primarily contains poems, prayers, worship and epic tales.
The Broadside Ballad Database is based on the domestic tradition of traditionally cataloguing of hand-printed books, while respecting contemporary international trends. For the purpose of name cataloguing, binding Guidelines for the Name Cataloguing of Manuscripts and Old Prints and Guidelines for the Description of 19th Century Broadside Ballad Sheets were adopted. The entries respect the MARC 21 bibliographic format.
