Genome of Melody: Studying Gregorian chant with phylogenetics

As part of the upcoming ÚFAL Monday lecture series, Jan Hajič Jr. will present the process of cultural evolution using the example of Gregorian chant, a key musical tradition of medieval Europe. He will demonstrate how phylogenetic methods can be used to reconstruct the “melodic dialects” of chant and uncover the historical patterns of its spread and transformation.
